Banana - Good or Bad ?

31.12.1969 categories:

When I mention the word banana, most of my clients straight away say it's bad for you.
Bananas are viewed as a fattening fruit. But is this true ?

It's true that bananas are low in water compared to other fruits. That means there's more carbohydrate (and therefore more calories) per bite compared to say a plum. Water has no calories, so generally, the higher a fruits' water content, the lower the calories per serving.

Like other fruits and vegetables, bananas contain no fat, sodium or cholesterol.

Bananas are rich in vitamin B6 and they are a good source of fiber, vitamin C, magnesium and potassium.
Lack of B6 in a diet can cause weakness, irritability and insomnia. The potassium found in bananas helps to regulate blood pressure and may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. Potassium is also essential for helping muscles to contract properly during exercise and reduces cramping up.
A medium-sized banana provides 400 mg of potassium, that's about 11% of your daily requirement of potassium, and contains approximately 105 calories and 4 grams of fiber.
Bananas are a good source of pectin and resistant starch which causes a sensation of fullness and satiety. This can work in your favor if you're trying to lose weight.

To keep calories in check, just choose "baby" bananas, the ones about the size of long fingers, which are naturally portion controlled. One of these little bananas provides just 50-60 calories (less than a small apple) and amounts to about ½ cup when sliced.

Here's how the calories climb based on size:
Small - 6-7cm long - 90 calories
Medium - 7-8cm long - 105 calories
Large - 8-9cm long - 121 calories
Extra-large - over 9cm - 135 calories

The bottom line,  when bananas are used as a substitute for high calorie desserts, they can be a healthy addition to a weight loss diet. Otherwise, if you're intent on losing weight, eat bananas in moderation and explore some of the other lower calorie fruit options such as apples and berries.
